Support a Grade 6 Leaver at Destiny Garden School: Help Shape a Brighter Future
Could you help a talented Grade 6 graduate from Destiny Garden School (DGS) take the next step in their education? Your support could be life-changing for a student ready to transition to Junior School (JS) but unable to afford the fees.
A New Era in Kenyan Education
In 2017, Kenya adopted a new educational structure resembling the UK system. Under the previous system, primary school education extended until age 14 or 15, but now, children complete primary school at age 11 and progress to JSS.
Destiny Garden School now includes:
- Nursery and two Pre-Primary classes
- Six primary-grade classes
- A newly established Junior Secondary School, offering Grades 7, 8, and 9
DGS was selected by educational authorities to establish a JS on its premises. With three current classes (Grades 7, 8, and 9) serving 93 students, this JS operates independently from the primary school and relies on separate funding.
Challenges for Talented Students
While some Grade 6 leavers are able to move on to Government-run JS schools, these institutions often have classes with 80+ students, leading to a significant drop in the quality of education.
At DGS’s JS, the student-to-teacher ratio is much smaller, and students benefit from well-equipped facilities like a computer lab and a science laboratory, built with the support of local organisations. However, many high-achieving Grade 6 students cannot afford the fees for this exceptional opportunity.
This year, a number of students are expected to excel in their Kenyan Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams but risk being unable to continue their education due to financial challenges.
How You Can Help
Destiny Children Charity currently focuses on supporting DGS’s primary school. However, we are seeking additional sponsors to provide opportunities for these talented students to continue their education at the DGS Junior School.
To give you an idea of the costs involved:
- Junior School lasts for three years.
- The annual fees are approximately £275.
- Additional costs for uniforms, books, sports gear etc. amount to about £50 in the first year, and less in subsequent years.
Sponsors receive a detailed profile of the student, regular progress reports, and letters from the child.
