A new education system in Kenya
January 2023 saw the implementation of the new system of education in Kenya called the 2-6-3-3-3 system (2 – 2 Pre-Primary Classes, 6 – 6 Primary classes, 3 – 3 Junior Secondary School classes, 3 – 3 Senior Secondary School classes, 3 – 3 University years). Since 1985 Primary schools have taken pupils from the age of 4 until 14/15. The new system is a little more like the one we are used to in the UK, with a change at the age of 11 years, when grade 6 pupils join a Junior Secondary School. For more details please see this link.
In December the Kenyan Government announced that suitable Primary Schools should accommodate a ‘Junior Secondary School’ (JSS). After a very thorough inspection, the Kenyan Ministry of Education have given Destiny Garden School the go ahead have a JSS. Funding and more facilities are required to do this and whether DGS will be able to accommodate a JSS is being piloted; they will start with year one of the JSS hosting former pupils from grade 6 classes. More information on the new system will be reported in due course.
