A Memorable Visit to Destiny Garden School by Alana and Jake

Last term, Destiny Garden School (DGS) welcomed two special guests, Alana and Jake, with an unforgettable celebration that truly captured the heart and spirit of the school.

From the moment they arrived, the energy was electric! A class greeted them at the gate with a joyful parade of song and dance, leading them to the rest of the school, where a 90-minute celebration of songs, cultural dances, and heartfelt speeches awaited. For Alana, returning to DGS after 8.5 years was deeply meaningful, and sharing this experience with her husband, Jake, made it even more magical.

Meeting Sponsored Students: A Heartwarming Connection

One of the highlights of their visit was meeting Habiba, the Grade 3 student Alana and Jake sponsor. Spending time with her was a poignant reminder of the power of education and the profound impact sponsorship has on a child’s life.

During their stay, Alana also met with eight students sponsored by generous individuals from her community in the States. She shared photos and stories about each sponsor, building a beautiful connection between these students and the people supporting their education.

Exploring the School’s Growth and Progress

Alana and Jake toured the school and were amazed by the remarkable changes since 2016. From new toilet facilities, offices, two computer labs, and a chemistry lab in progress to upgrades in classrooms, music, and sports equipment, DGS continues to thrive and grow.

What stood out most to them was the sense of family at DGS. Jake described the school as a place of care, unity, and shared commitment to education, nutrition, and opportunity. One teacher shared how much she loves working at DGS, emphasizing the supportive environment—a stark contrast to her previous experiences at other schools.

Interactive Learning and Creativity

Jake, a former music teacher, brought his expertise to the classroom with a lively lesson on rhythm. Using Queen’s legendary song “We Will Rock You,” he demonstrated rhythm concepts, encouraging students to clap, stomp, and sing along. The session was a perfect blend of fun and learning, leaving a lasting impression on everyone.

Meanwhile, Alana and Jake joined Grade 5 students for a session of free drawing and colouring. Inspired by the students’ creativity, they joined in by looking up pictures on their phones to draw alongside the young artists. A special highlight? Two girls drew princesses and named them after Alana—a gesture that deeply touched her.

A Sweet Farewell Celebration

On their final day, Alana and Jake treated the entire school to a sweet surprise—14 kilos of cake from a local bakery in Mombasa! Cutting and delivering the cake to every classroom was an adventure, but the joy on the students’ faces made it all worthwhile. The fun didn’t stop there—extra frosting became impromptu face paint, adding a playful twist to the celebration.

To top it off, everyone enjoyed a special lunch of pilau with meat and a banana, making it a day filled with happiness and togetherness.
